In June 2021, I was honoured to be a speaker for the National Campaign and Sensitization to Promote Cybersecurity Culture and the Responsible Use of social media during the working visit of the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng, in Buea, South West Region. This event brought together over 1,000 students and participants and in my presentation, I shared practical examples of how I leveraged on social media to contribute to the growth of many corporate institutions like creating varied social media content for enhanced visibility. I used the opportunity to highlight practical ways in which the general public and participants can make good and responsible use of social media. At the end, through my presentation, students and participants learnt practical ways to make good use of social media, contributing to the objectives of the campaign and the minister’s visit. 

In this article, I am going to highlight 7 ways you can make good use of social media.

1. Building a responsible profile /portfolio

With Social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, we can build a responsible profile and online CV/portfolio for ourselves or our brands.

Some Attributes of a good profile:

– Setup a Bio about you.

– Responsible Profile Photo, Cover, and Feeds.

2. Stop the spread of fake news

Sharing only verified information from reliable sources.

Verified pages on media usually have a blue ticked on their respective social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

3. Using social media for learning & education.

Social media platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, Groups on Facebook, and Medium can be used greatly for learning and education purposes. How?

Through Professional Groups on Facebook, Youtube Resources, LinkedIn, Medium, Edtech Platforms for learning.

4. Networking with organizations

We can use social media to Connect with Organization, Brands, to Benefit from Opportunity alerts, Job opportunities, and access to information directly from the organization.

5. To gather feedback

Social media platforms can be used to conduct surveys and polls. This is essential to the success of any cause, business, or initiative where an audience or customer base plays a major role.
